Is the Museum accessible for visitors with disabilities?

Yes, the Watkins Museum’s public spaces are fully accessible for our visitors.  A wheelchair accessible entrance is located on 11th Street. A wheelchair is available onsite for visitor use. An elevator provides access to our gallery floors.

Is parking available?

Street parking is available directly in front of the museum on Massachusetts Street and beside the facility on 11th Street. Free 2-hour parking is also available at a public lot nearby.

Is there a place to check my coat/other belongings?

Yes, feel free to check personal belongings at the front desk.

Is Wi-fi available?

Yes, you can surf the web at our facility!

Is there an admission charge?

No, admission to the museum is free!

I would like to know how much an artifact is worth. Can the Museum provide appraisals?

Due to ethical concerns, Watkins Museum does not conduct appraisals. Visit the International Society of Appraisers at isa-appraisers.org to find a certified appraiser.

What are the opportunities for research at the Museum?

The Douglas County Historical Society has thousands of photographs and documents pertaining to the history of Douglas County, Kansas and its people available in the Archives of Watkins Museum of History. Visit the Research page for details about our research services and policies.

How long should I plan for my visit to the Museum?

The duration of your visit is entirely up to you, but we suggest that visitors plan to spend at least one hour at the Watkins Museum.

Is the Watkins Museum available for private events?

Yes, we’d be happy to have you host your event at the Watkins. See our rental form and floor plan for more details, or contact us with any questions you have.

How long are museum tours?

Guided tours typically last 45 to 60 minutes, but we can arrange a tour to accommodate a group’s needs. If you would like to have a guided tour of our building’s architecture and history, please contact us ahead of time and we’ll be glad to show you around. Guided tours cost $10 per person.

Is photography permitted?

Yes, please take as many photos as you like. If you’re posting to social media, be sure to include the #WatkinsMuseum hashtag!

Does the museum have a cafe?

The Watkins Museum does not have a café, but there are many excellent food and drink choices in the downtown Lawrence area, with some options just steps away from the museum’s front door!

When does the Museum consider donations for its collections?

Watkins Museum considers donations year-round.

Can I drop off my objects(s) for review?

Object reviews are available through appointment only.

How often may I visit as a member?

Members and non-members alike may visit as often as they please during our hours of operation.
