Transplanting Heritage: Judaica from the Klein Collection

Early Kansas was a land of immigrants. Among them were Jewish immigrants, mostly from Germany, who settled in communities across northeastern Kansas, including Kansas City, Eudora, and Lawrence. Committed to establishing lives as Americans, Jewish settlers were equally determined to preserve the heritage carried with them from Europe. Religious observances, and the objects they required, became a way to preserve cultural identity in a new land. The objects displayed here, through the generosity of the Michael Klein Collection at the Temple, Congregation B’Nai Jehudah in Overland Park, Kansas, share this story. Celebrating a collection of the finest Judaica spanning centuries and continents, the Michael Klein Collection is among the largest and most diverse collections of its kind in the United States. The life’s work of B’nai Jehudah member Michael Klein, the purpose of the collection goes beyond beauty and appreciation. Shared to educate, inform, and inspire, these objects illustrate the rich history and culture of the Jewish people.
