In 1979, the Watkins Museum received a Confederate First National Flag with a puzzling backstory. Supposedly carried by Quantrill’s raiders during the Civil War–including their infamous raid on Lawrence in 1863–little evidence actually survives for the flag’s provenance. The artifact is too fragile for even temporary display; instead, this unique exhibit will examine the place of Confederate flags like this one in American history and culture and invite audiences to draw their own conclusions about the origins of the “Watkins Mystery Flag.”
