Zouaves: The Civil War’s Most Colorful Soldiers
8/23/24 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
In their new book Zouave Theaters: Transnational Military Fashion and Performance, Carol E. Harrison and Thomas J. Brown chart the rise and fall of the Zouave uniform, the nineteenth century’s most important military fashion fad for men and women on both sides of the Atlantic. Originating in French colonial Algeria, Zouave fashion spread to America in 1860 and became an iconic military look during the Civil War.
Join us on the Watkins Museum Facebook and YouTube for a live online talk with Thomas J. Brown about Zouaves during the Civil War, their combination of theatrics with the military, and how they influenced visual artists for many years afterward.
